All About Karen...
I have loved making art from a very young age, and studied painting (oils), drawing and pottery at UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater. Later, as I became interested in watercolor, I took classes with artists whose work I admired. Watercolor is now my main medium, though I also enjoy acrylic painting and pencil or ink drawing.
Since I love being outside, nature is a big influence in my work. I bring a sketchbook and tiny pallet with me in my kayak or hiking backpack. Many of my paintings include trees, flowers, and/or landscapes, a nod to my years teaching Outdoor Education. Occasionally, there is an abstract or abstract expressionism thrown in.
I do like the challenge of a new project that takes me out of my comfort zone to try new things and keep on learning. When someone requests a painting that is unlike anything I’ve attempted before, I am energized and determined to create a piece that will hopefully be greater than their expectations. I also enjoy teaching watercolor classes with adults or children.
My husband of many decades and I enjoy traveling, especially with our camper, and exploring new places or revisiting some of our favorites. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, National Parks and Alaska are included in the “favorites” category. We love to visit our daughter and her husband in Colorado and get a little dose of mountains.
