About the Artist and Metatorus Mixed Media
Janice Hovey is a recently retired arts educator. She received a BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and after spending more than 20 years as a graphic designer, she taught elementary school art for 17 years. She is a mixed media artist and primarily makes collage and assembláge pieces using a variety of materials.
The Metatorus work started with jewelry and assembláge pieces made from re-purposed bicycle inner-tubes, but after finding a 1941 edition of Audubon’s The Birds of America her creative energy shifted towards analog collages. She has been experimenting with cutting and weaving the vintage Audubon prints for several years and from this, the BirdCrash series emerged.
She also creates smaller digital prints called Bird Kaleidoscopes by manipulating smaller sections of the woven bird originals. They are more accessible and easier to produce in multiples and the design possibilities are endless.
She has been exhibiting at fine art and craft shows both in Northern Wisconsin and Chicago for many years and you can see more of her work on Instagram at metatorus.mixed.media and on her web site at Metatorus.com
